The red, white and blue colours of the Southern Arrows were out in force at the City-Bay fun run on Sun Sept 20th. The sight of half-a dozen of South Australia’s elite male orienteers lining up to start at the front of the sub-50minute cage certainly impressed the runners around them. Silence at the start as the runners pounded the eerily quiet city streets soon gave way to cheering supporters and bands playing music on the kerbside with varying degrees of skill. At Kurralta Park, the 6km mark, all but the fastest orienteers needed to put their abilities at ducking and weaving through the forest to good use as they negotiated their way through the hordes of 6km runners. Simon Uppill appeared on the ABC evening news because he finished at the same time as the first woman, 19th overall. John Nieuwenhoven was nearly as impressive in 69th place. Fern Tomas and Luke Hazell could be spotted in the crowd photo which appeared in Monday’s Advertiser, so orienteers got good coverage. All entrants in the City-Bay received an invitation to a free promotional orienteering event at North Adelaide on Sunday November 1st. More than a dozen of the Southern Arrows ran the 12km course from North Terrace to Glenelg in a range of times:
Riordon Dose runs strongly to the finish
Simon Uppill 40.06 (19th)
John Nieuwenhoven 44.12 (69th) Tom Dose 47:00 (193rd) Steven Dose 47.36 (235th) Lachlan Hallett 48.22 (296th) Rory McComb 48.23 (298th) Riordan Dose 48.27 (303rd) Susanne Casanova 51.23 (651st) Jenny Casanova 52.45 (905th) Fern Tomas 56.06 (1676th) Zara Soden 56.16 (1718th) Luke Hazell 61.15 (3316th) Tyson Hillyard 63.17 (3985th)
Robin Uppill ran the 6km in 32.57 . Lauren Gillis was unfortunately absent because of injury. A number of other orienteers (including Harry Waterhouse, Mel Fuller, Erica Diment) were sighted at the finish but their times are unknown.
