Orienteers successful in Black Hill Challenge

Monday, 9 November 2009

Several members of the Southern Arrows and other orienteers participated in the Black Hill Challenge on Sunday morning 8th November.  Warm conditions, the climb up Atkinson Avenue to Black Hill Park, followed by the steepening climb up Ghost Tree Gully, the long downhill descent down Amber Gully followed by the up and down section back to the top of Atkinson Avenue, tested the orienteers and other runners.

Starting out conservatively, Lauren Gillis found she had energy left for the final hilly section, overtaking a number of other runners in the final 3 km to be the fastest female in 61:28 and 8th overall.  Jenny Casanova was fourth fastest female in 71:32.

In the men's section, John Nieuwenhoven was 7th overall, and first in the 26-35 age group (excluding the overall placegetters).  Junior Riordan Dose in 61:45 was 9th overall and 1st in the 16-25 age group.  He was closely followed by his father Stephen in 62:16.

Others who ran were junior Luke Hazell, and veterans Harry Waterhouse (time around 63 minutes) , and Robin and Adrian Uppill.
