Orienteering Skills and Techniques
This page will contain information on basic orienteering skills and techniques. The most important is map reading - being able to understand the map features and symbols and relating them to what you see on the ground. This is important to learn as you first begin orienteering on the simpler street and park maps and on the easier courses on cross country maps.
The following documents are provided for your enjoyment and hopefully will provide some useful tips. Pleae also refer to the pages describing the Orienteering Map and the Orienteering Course.

The OA web site contains links to a number of sheets of coaching tips which can be used by the individual. These can be found at http://www.orienteering.asn.au/promotion/devel/develcoach/
They focus on discussing the different types of features on a map with diagrammatic and pictorial examples. For newcomers they are well worth a look.
