The 2024 SA Schools Orienteering Relay Championships was one of our most successful yet, attracting 81 teams, with 162 students from 13 schools to the event at Lochiel Park on 30th August.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of teachers and students, the following schools fielded teams: Adelaide Botanic High School, St John's Grammar School, Cornerstone College, Coromandel Valley PS, Crafers PS, Hawthorndene PS, Heathfield HS, Marryatville HS, Mitcham Girls HS, Stirling East PS, Urrbrae Agricultural HS, Warooka PS and Woodside PS.

So many special thank you’s to hand out.

First, thank you to orienteering legend Simon Uppill for setting age-appropriate courses on what can be a highly technical area.

Some controls proved a challenge for less experienced students but the results showed that after-school training sessions are working well, giving these students the skills they need to orient their map to north and follow terrain and features. As we all know, the younger you start orienteering and the more you practice, the more confident you will be when you pick up your map at the beginning of a race.

Thank you also to Robin Uppill, who again used her vast orienteering experience to be the Controller, and ensure the smooth running of the event.

The whole event worked well due to the wonderful efforts of our event secretaries, Dianne Bergen and Colin Burnett, who did the many jobs that were needed to get courses allotted to the relay teams, as well as the set-up on the day with not only live results but also a TV screen updating the places and attracting the crowds of kids to follow the action.

Thanks to Leila Henderson, who provided marketing support and photography on the day (along with Nigel Dobson), learning new skills from Ken, to be able to do the mass email send-out to all the schools on the database.

On the field, thank you to Clive and Marion Arthur – who planned and set up the entire start and tagging area, with great experience and knowledge. Al and Bob Smith were also kept busy with the maintenance of the ‘graveyard’ tagging areas and map collection.

Our finish chute was expertly organised by Erica and Trevor Diment - with great use of control stands and bunting. It always amazes me to see the arena transform from an oval to a fully set-out event centre.

Then there was the friendly registration team of Fi Pahor, Christine Franklin and Noelene Anderson, who saved the day with their adept handling of the many team changes that emerged on the day, with quick bib changes.

We also congratulate Sophie Bird and Alex Fairgrieve, who ran the SA Schools Team Fundraising stall. Their professional catering nous came to the rescue of all the participants, with their outstanding food and drinks stall, after the late cancellation of the coffee van - with cut sandwiches as well as hot toasties. They were helped by the hardworking team of Lan Kelly and Lyn Barnett.

Now, to the stars of the show - the PINK HAT PEOPLE. These brave O SA volunteers, with all-control maps in hand, braved Lochiel Park (though the weather gods were kind!) - to come to the aid of students who needed assistance. Were they needed? Yes indeed – at an event that attracted a record number of orienteering novices.

Thank you all: Meredith Rasch, Mark Overton, Aylwin Lim, Wendy Deegan, Evelyn Colwell, Noelene Anderson, Peter Cutten, Peter Kreminski, Christine Franklin, Bev Gratton and Guy Schubert for a job well done.

What an amazing team, all focused on helping our students finish the relays with a good feeling of accomplishment and enjoyment in being able to attend.

Our goal is to keep improving so all suggestions are welcome.
